The amount of copper used in new energy vehicles is far higher than that in gasoline and diesel vehicles. A hybrid vehicle uses 40 kg of copper, a plug-in hybrid vehicle needs 60 kg of copper, and a pure electric vehicle uses as much as 83 kg of copper.

 

In the electric vehicle industry, 600,000 tons of copper were used in 2021, and it is expected to increase to 2.9 million tons by 2030, a fivefold increase in ten years (Wood Mackenzie research). Including Chinese companies, the whole world is desperately looking for copper mines, but almost no new copper mines have been discovered in recent years.

 

From 2011 to 2020, only 15 new copper mines were discovered globally in 10 years, and the geological conditions are getting worse and worse. No copper mine locations have been explored since 2020.

 

However, with the rapid rise of the Chinese economy, the domestic market's demand for copper materials has continued to grow. Since 2005, China has been the world's largest producer and consumer of refined copper for at least 18 consecutive years.

 

Although China's copper ore production is considerable, it is still lagging behind the ever-increasing demand, and we can only rely on continuous imports to meet the demand. Such a high degree of external dependence seriously threatens the supply security of China's copper resources. In 2016, the "100 Achievements of Geological Survey in China" compiled by the China Geological Survey ranked copper ore as one of China's major and urgently needed mineral resources.
